BABES/SBE LUNCHEON ON WEDNESDAY June 28th
Our guest will be Fred Binczewski, with Anicom Multimedia Wiring Systems. He will be joined by reps from Lemo and Sasco Systems for a presentation on their new connector designs for digital video applications. As usual, our luncheon will be at Sinbad's just south of the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero near the foot of Mission St. We meet at 11:30 and are seated at 12:30.

Company Background
Lemo is a Swiss manufacturer of precision engineered circular self- latching, quick connect- disconnect electrical, optical and hybrid connectors for a wide variety of applications. Currently, Lemo offers the most recognized hybrid composite connector for the digital hdtv and broadcasting environment according to SMPTE standards. Exploring the possibilities concerning this new technology and its applications, both Anicom and Sasco Systems have joined together with Lemo to form an alliance for the purpose of providing an end to end solution for hdtv and digital conversion work. Anicom is a North American multi - media distributor with over 60 locations enabling the alliance to do just about any project throughout North America. Anicom provides a multitude of products and services through these locations.

Sasco Systems is a division of Sasco Electric, one of the largest contractors in the U.S. As an alliance member, Sasco Systems, an engineer / construction contractor, provides clients such as stadiums, sports arenas, and broadcast and television studios engineered projects from a value management perspective.

Zipplus Anyone?
I finally got the mailing label program set up to handle those extra 4 digits we all seem to have. So if you can let me know what they are for your address, I'll add them.

SCANNERS
I have an old B&W scanner and I'm looking to get a new color one. The present one turns a business card into something unreadable. I assume I need at least 1200 x 1200 resolution to do that right. I'm aware there are some scanners that just do business cards but I'd like a more general purpose unit. Scanners run from $65 to $500. I'd appreciate hearing from you if you've added a new scanner recently.

Finding a Tool Kit
The task seemed simple enough. Change a value on a host computer and have connected computers detect that change and use it as a trigger.

I went to a major bookstore and went through the some 8 linear feet of books on Visual Basic. Checking the table of contents and the indexes I found that they were concerned with making things happen on the computer in front of you. The idea that one computer might actually interact with another wasn't entertained in any of them.

We all know this is possible and done all the time but finding it in one book is just about impossible.

There is a protocol for operating in a Windows or NT environment. Another protocol is required for passing something over a network. Since this is to be a pull rather than a push transfer, that too will take some special code. To store data in a specific memory location takes yet another specific routine.

Even if you had all the pieces, you'd spend quite a bit of time troubleshooting your masterpiece.

About the best you can hope for is to find a toolkit that has pieces of code that can be strung together be it in C++, Visual Basic, or some other library not even anticipated.

Such are the dangers of not being a code warrior on a daily basis. Knowing where to go and find something that works seems to be most of the battle.
